Schedule:

This schedule will change and adapt to the needs of the class as we progress throughout the semester. Readings in both The Way of the Storyteller and specially Educating Esme will cover the course of the semester. Also, you will need to read through The Book of Lulu at your convenience throughout the semester so long as you have it completed by Thursday, October 7.

Week One:

Tuesday, August 24 course introduction, meet and greet Read "Punctuation Made Simple"
Thursday, August 26 grammar exercises, intro lit. narrative

Read excerpts from Anne Fadiman's Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader -- "Preface," "The Joy of Sesquipedalians"

Read several brief adult literacy narratives: "Richmond," "Wallis," "Henderson"

Note the different writing styles between the two different readings.

Brainstorm about your personal lit. narrative. And don't forget to buy your books.

Read "Introduction" and "Experience" in The Way of the Storyteller.

Listen to various stories

How can I use what I learned in my elementary classroom with my students?
"Storytelling as an Approach to Children's Books and Reading"

Even though most of the titles she uses are outdated, think about the subject matter of the books and if they would appeal to children of today. Why or why not? What does appeal to children today in regards to stories and picture books (this could be answered in terms of content or presentation)? How do you get reluctant readers to read? How is storytelling used in your school? In what ways are stories told to the students you interact with? Do they only receive stories at school? Where else?

Discuss letter writing, Dodgson essay, and do a practice letter using Esme's class as an example.

Read e-mail ettiquette online or in PDF format.

 

Week Six:

Tuesday, September 28

Turn in student release form.

Give back literacy narrative and discuss writing hints and feedback.

Discuss audience and classroom experiences for possible letter topics.

Practice Letter Form with Commas

Blog #4 due today

Write letter rough drafts. Make sure that your letter is formatted correctly for your rough draft since this is one area we will be checking in the peer review session.

Review sample underachievement letter and achievement letter to parents (in PDF). What is good and bad about these two letters?

Thursday, September 30

Polish letters.

Bring in a children's book, fiction or non-fiction that addresses or has technology in it in some form or fashion for class Tuesday.

Read to May 22 in Educating Esme.

Discuss student examples of children's books with technology. Show sample of Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Blog # 5 due today

Find one specific example of how a teacher could use technology in the classroom and build a one unit lesson plan around it. This will be due next Tuesday

Thursday, October 7

Due Today: Completed reading of The Book of Lulu

Meet in CIRCA lab CBD 105 which is Classroom Building 105 behind the MVP sports bar and grill for class today.

Play video games and interactive texts for children.

Discuss pedagogical uses of technology.

Find one specific example of how a teacher could use technology in the classroom and build a one unit lesson plan around it.

Finish Part 3 in Educating Esme.

Week Eight:

Tuesday, October 12 Look at examples of using technology in a classroom.
Presentation of student lesson plans.

Read Epilogue in Educating Esme.

Find one particular video game or interactive fiction that is availible free online that is targeting toward children dealing with or on one of the following topics: Environment, Technology, Fairy tales, Comics, History, Television

Thursday, October 14

Meet in CIRCA lab CBD 105 which is Classroom Building 105 behind the MVP sports bar and grill for class today.

Disuss lab experience.

What is technology?

Discuss technology in the classroom and pedagogical uses of technology.

Find two articles in a scholarly journal on the topic of technology and education (think about what you want to write your technology report on and possibly use these articles for your research).

Week Nine:

Tuesday, October 19

Discuss technology in education as a current event.

Blog #7 due today

Thursday, October 21 Meet outside of class with your peer review partner. Write peer critique. See helpful hints.

Week Ten:

Tuesday, October 26

Due today: Two copies of the one page peer critique, the marked up copy of your partner's paper, and a fresh copy of your rough draft (at least 2 and 1/2 pages).

You will turn this in a pocket folder (no three ring binders) and include the following components: the rough draft due on Tuesday Oct 26, the peer critic that you wrote, the final rough draft due on Thursday Oct 28 which should have corrections from the peer reviews, and then the final paper.
